What to Check When Buying a Second-Hand Washing Machine
If you're buying from a private seller, these are the essential checks to carry out before handing over any money. If you're buying from Appliance King, we've already done all of this for you - but it's still useful to understand what we check.
Run a full cycle including the spin. Don't accept a quick demonstration - run the machine through a complete wash and spin cycle. Listen for unusual noises, vibration, or banging during the spin cycle (which can indicate worn drum bearings or unbalanced load distribution).
Listen during wash and spin. The wash cycle should be relatively quiet. A loud grinding sound during agitation can indicate bearing wear. A harsh metal-on-metal sound during spin is a red flag.
Check the door seal on front-loaders. Inspect the rubber door gasket carefully for tears, cracks, mould growth, or trapped debris. A damaged door seal will leak water and would need professional repair. Factor this into your assessment.
Inspect the drum interior. Check for rust spots, scratches, or signs of damage. Minor scuff marks are fine, but visible rust inside the drum suggests the appliance has been poorly maintained or is at end of life.
Check the hoses. Inspect both the inlet hoses (water in) and the drain hose for cracks, perishing, or damage. These are inexpensive to replace but good to know about upfront.
Confirm it drains completely. After the cycle, the drum should be empty. If water remains, the drain pump may be partially blocked or failing.
Ask about service history. Has the machine ever been repaired? What was the issue? A machine that's had a drum bearing replaced recently and is otherwise in good condition is actually a better buy than one with no history - the expensive repair is already done.

What to Check When Buying a Second-Hand Fridge
Fridges are the most expensive second-hand appliance to get wrong - a failed compressor on an otherwise reasonable-looking fridge is an expensive repair that may not be worth it. Here's what to check:
Run it for at least 30 minutes. A fridge that's been unplugged for a while needs time to stabilise. After 30 minutes, the interior should be noticeably cool - ideally use a thermometer and aim for 3–5°C in the fridge section.
Listen to the compressor. You should be able to hear the compressor start and run. It should start smoothly and run at an even hum. A compressor that struggles to start (clicks repeatedly or makes a loud clunk) may have a failing start relay or capacitor - or worse, a dying compressor.
Check all door seals. The seals should be supple and make an airtight contact all the way around. To test: close the door on a piece of paper and try to pull it out - there should be resistance. If it slides out easily, the seal is worn and needs replacing.
Check for frost inside the fridge section. Ice forming inside the main fridge compartment (not the freezer) indicates a defrost system problem - the defrost heater or defrost thermostat may have failed.
Look for pooling water. Water collecting at the bottom of the fridge or underneath it can indicate a blocked defrost drain, a door seal problem, or a condensation issue.
Age matters. Under 8 years old is generally a good buy if everything checks out. Over 12 years, the risk of compressor failure increases significantly. We recommend looking for fridges under 10 years old for the best value-to-risk ratio.
What to Check When Buying a Second-Hand Dryer
Dryers are generally more straightforward to assess than fridges or washing machines, but there are still important things to verify before purchasing.
Run a full cycle with a damp load. Put in a damp towel and run the dryer for at least 20–30 minutes. At the end, the towel should be dry or nearly dry. If it's still damp, the dryer isn't heating properly.
Confirm it heats. Carefully feel the drum interior (when it's safe to do so) or the exhaust air - it should be warm to hot, not ambient temperature.
Check the drum turns smoothly. With the dryer running (with a load), the drum should turn without hesitation, grinding, or squealing. Any roughness in the rotation points to worn drum rollers or bearings.
Listen for noise. A gentle tumbling sound is normal. Squealing, grinding, thumping, or rattling are not. These indicate worn mechanical components that will fail soon if not already failing.
Check the vent clears properly. For vented dryers, check that the exhaust vent isn't blocked by lint. Hold your hand near the external vent outlet - you should feel a strong airflow. A weak airflow means the duct is restricted.
Inspect the door seal. The door gasket should be intact and sealing properly. A damaged door seal allows heat to escape, reducing drying efficiency and creating a potential fire hazard.
